Introduction to ICSLS

International Conference on Sri Lanka Studies (ICSLS) is a bi-annual meeting of scholars researching on historical, socio-economic, cultural, and political aspects of  Sri Lanka. After its humble beginnings at a gathering of 25 scholars at Sussex, the UK in 1987, the ICSLS was held in venues across the globe and continued its scholarly spirit and tradition and has now grown into a major academic event.

The 9th ICSLS held in 2003, was an important landmark in the journey of the ICSLS as it contributed to formal founding of the " Sri Lanka Studies Network" to further the mission of ICSLS by facilitating frequent interactions among the Sri Lanka Studies community.  A detailed description of the ICSLS is available at the Sri Lanka Studies Network Homepage

10th ICSLS in Kelaniya

Both the year 2005 and the 10th ICSLS are historic events. The former as it marks the 500th Anniversary of the arrival of the  Portuguese and marked the beginnings of an era of unequal interactions with the West.  The ICSLS to be held in 2005 is the 10th in a chain of academic conferences on Sri Lanka studies.  Holding the conference in Sri Lanka at this important year is expected to bring wider participation of scholars from Sri Lanka and elsewhere makes the gathering more diverse and representative.

The theme “Sri Lanka after 500 Years of Western Colonization and Future Perspectives” will explore various facets of the past and the future of Sri Lanka in the global context. Research Center for Social Sciences ( RCSS ) of the Kelaniya University will host the conference.  Sri Lanka Studies Network Secretariat will facilitate the initial logistics in conference organizing.

Kelaniya University,  the direct successor to the Vidyalankara Pirivena, the seat of higher learning and the cradle of the contemporary nationalist political thought is an ideal venue for the event.
