“The First Undergraduate Research Symposium” of the Department of History- 2017

The first Academic Research Symposium for the undergraduates of the Department of History, the University of Kelaniya was held on the 6th of April 2017 at the Social Sciences Auditorium.
The purpose of the Research Symposium was to guide the undergraduates to identify, assist and engage in activities related to research, as it is one of the main features of the University education.
Delivering the keynote speech, Professor A. H. M. H. Abayarathne, Dean of Social Sciences of the University of Kelaniya and the Professor of the Department of History, stated that the Palm Leaf Manuscript Study and Research Library has paved the way for the undergraduates to engage in Research activities for the betterment of the society. Furthermore, he stated that the Undergraduates should pay attention to the vast knowledge contained in the palm leaf manuscripts. Even the western countries including America have already engaged in Research activities about palm leaf manuscripts. In addition, he will take necessary steps to make the Palm Leaf Manuscript Study and Research Library at the University of Kelaniya an excellent center for the study of Palm Leaf Manuscripts.
Furthermore, he stated that the palm leaf manuscripts contain a deep knowledge about medicine and ancient local things. Therefore, Palm Leaf Manuscript Study and Research Library can be used to identify better Research topics apart from traditional research topics.
Professor D.M. Semasinghe, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Professor A.H.M.H. Abayarathna, the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, W.M. Karunananda, the Registrar of the University of Kelaniya, Ms. D.P. Tharangani, the Assistant Registrar of the Faculty of Social Sciences, the former Deans, Professor R. H. R. Gunawardhana, Professor U.B. Karunananda, Professor K. M. D. Gunasekara, Professor Uda Hettige, the Head of the Department of Archaeology, Dr. Nishan Sakalasooriya, the Head of the Department of Geography and the academic staff members participated in this event.
