Signing of a MoU between the University of Kelaniya and the French Embassy in Colombo, Sri Lanka

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the University of Kelaniya and the French Embassy in Colombo, Sri Lanka which will enable the French Studies Section of the Department of Modern Languages to receive a French Guest Scholar every academic year. The French Embassy in Colombo, the agreement states, will cover all the expenses for the French guest scholar.

The MoU was signed by Prof. D.M. Semasinghe, Vice- Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, as well as H.E. Mr. Jean-Marin Schuh, Ambassador of France to Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Accordingly, Ms. Eleanore Ude is the first guest scholar the University hosts. Prof. Niroshini Gunasekera from the French Language Section, Department of Modern Languages, along with Dr. Dilrukshi Rathnayake, Head, Department of Modern Languages introduced Ms. Eleanore Ude to the Vice-Chancellor of the University and Prof. Patrick Ratnayake. Dean, Faculty of Humanities on the 9th of November 2017 at the Vice-Chancellor’s office of the University.

Speaking at the event, Prof. Niroshini Gunasekera stated that the need of a native speaker was very important to the French Studies Section and that she had been trying to get an opportunity of this type for a long time. Furthermore, she appreciated the assistance she received from M. Jean-Philippe Gavois, Cultural Councellor of the French Embassy in Colombo, Sri Lanka for making the request a reality.
