World Philosophy Day Celebration at the University of Kelaniya

An event to celebrate the “World Philosophy Day – 2017” organized by the Department of Philosophy of the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya was held on the 16th of November 2017 at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Social Sciences. It was the first time the World Philosophy Day was celebrated in the University of Kelaniya. The World Philosophy Day was proclaimed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to be celebrated every third Thursday of November. This year, it is celebrated on November 16, 2017. By celebrating World Philosophy Day each year, UNESCO highlights the enduring value of philosophy for the development of human thought, for each culture and for each individual.

During the event, Prof. W.A. Gnanadasa Perera, Senior Professor in Philosophy and Psychology of the Department of Pali & Buddhist Studies, University of Sri Jayewardenepura delivered a detailed lecture titled “Sexuality and Society” and explained the modern need for sexual ethics. Furthermore, he explained that the sexuality plays an essential role of an individual’s life and that it helps to lead to a moral life.

Prof. A.H.M.H. Abayarathna, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Dr. Tharanga Dharaneetha, Head of the Department of Philosophy, academic staff of the Department of Philosophy and many undergraduates participated in this event.
