‘Thā 2017’- Cultural Performance organized by the Visual Arts & Design and Performing Arts Unit of the Department of Fine Arts, University of Kelaniya was successfully held on the 15th of November 2017 at the Sri Dharmaloka Convocation Hall of the University of Kelaniya. The concert was organized with the view of developing the soft skills of the undergraduates of the Visual Arts & Design and Performing Arts Unit.
This concert, which had given the priority to the Sri Lankan culture, was a mixure of Kandyan dances (Uda Rata Natum), low country dances (Pahatha Rata Natum) and Sabaragamuwa dances. The concert was not merely a dancing show; it contributed to a broader understanding of the spectators about the folklore and the subsequent formation of folk culture. The folk dance remixes, Drum Symphony and the fire dance amazed the spectators.
Several renowned artistes who rendered a great service to the field of Arts were also felicitated parallel to the ‘Thā – 2017’ concert. Accordingly, Prof. Mangalika Jayathunga, Prof. B.D. Nandadeva, Dr. Ashoka Dissanayake and veteran dancer S. Welabadage were felicitated. In addition, Late. Ms. Ishani Ranganath, who actively involved in the arts activities of the Department of Fine Arts as well as the entire University, was also warmly remembered.
The event was graced by Prof. Sarath Amunugama. Former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya as the Chief Guest. The event was graced by Prof. Patrick Ratnayake, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Dr. Prashanthi Narangoda, Head of the Department of Fine Arts, Senior Lecturer (Ms.) Lanka De Silva, Unit Head of the Visual Arts and Performing Arts Unit and other academic staff members of the Department of Fine Arts. The event was also participated by many invitees and Undergraduates of the University.
