‘Diversity Matters’, a roundtable discussion to enable a diverse workforce in Sri Lanka

To mark International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the Coordinating Centre for Students with Disabilities (CCSD) in collaboration with the Career Guidance Unit, University of Kelaniya and the Association for Students with Visual Difficulties, University of Sri Jayawardenapura organised ‘Diversity Matters’, a roundtable discussion to enable a diverse workforce in Sri Lanka. The event was held on the 04th of December 2017 at the Department of English Language Teaching (DELT). The programme began with a welcome address by Chamod Ruwanga, a third year Honours degree student on behalf of the Coordinating Centre for Students with Disabilities. It included talks by Deshabandu Manique Gunaratne, Manager – Specialised Training & Disability Resource Centre at the Employers’ Federation of Ceylon, Dr. Imalka de Silva, Assistant Manager HR at MAS Holdings, Mr. Chanaka Vasana Gunarathna, Computer Instructor at the University of Sri Jayawardenapura and Ms. Esther McIntosh, Country Director at World University Service of Canada (WUSC) and a question and answer session at the end discussing current concerns on accessing employment. The audience comprised of the guest speakers, Dr. Chamaru De Alwis, Director of the Career Guidance Unit, a group of students with disabilities representing the University of Sri Jayawardenapura and a group representing the University of Kelaniya, two parents and Dr. Shyamani Hettiarachchi, Director of the Coordinating Centre for Students with Disabilities.
