The Faculty of Social Sciences expands its family tree by establishing three New Academic Departments

The Department of Economics, Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Kelania was commenced with the establishment of the University in 1959. At the undergraduate level, the Department offered Bachelor of Arts (Honours) and Bachelor of Arts (General) Degree programmes in Economics, Social Statistics, Political Science and International Studies. However, after years of excellence in providing quality education, the Social Statistics, Political Science and International Studies were established as three separate academic Departments of the Faculty of Social Sciences on the 01st of August 2017.

New Department of Social Statistics
Earlier, the (General) Degree Programme in Social Statistics was commenced under the Department of Economics in year 1991 and the (Special) Degree Programme in Social Statistics was initiated in year 1992 under the same department. After 26 years of excellence in providing quality education to the undergraduates in Social Statistics, the Department of Social Statistics is established under the Faculty of Social Sciences as a new academic department on the 01st of August 2017.

The significance of establishing the Department of Social Statistics is clarified by the current necessity of providing innovative and quality education to the present and future generations to make versatile professionals. The Department is committed to create and disseminate theoretical and empirical knowledge related to statistical analysis studies through research, teaching, and various professional and policy contributions.

Dr. Manjula Gunarathne is the new Head of the Department of Social Statistics. He is a prominent scholar who obtained a First Class (Honours) Degree in Social Statistics from the University of Kelaniya. In addition, he won Venerable Bambarende Siri Seevali Thero Memorial Gold Medal awarded by Alumni Association of the University of Kelaniya as he was the graduate who got the highest marks for the B.A. (Honours) Degree examination of the Faculty of Social Sciences. He obtained his MSSc. in Economics from the University of Kelaniya and completed his PhD in Planning and Development from Universiti Malaysia SABAH.

The new academic Department expects to introduce a new Degree Programme in Business Statistics and to conduct annual Research Conferences on Social Statistics for undergraduates. Additionally, the new Department will continue its publication of STATICA; the academic journal on Social Statistics.

New Department of International Studies
The Department of International Studies was established as a separate department in the Faculty of Social Sciences on the 01st of August in 2017. Before the establishment as a department, all the degree programmes in International Studies were conducted under the Department of Economics. The Degree programmes in International Studies were initiated with 98 students in the year 2002 and 38 of them were selected to specialize in International Studies. International Studies degree programme has its uniqueness and it is much popular among students in the University as well as in the country. It carried more than 200 students in academic years from 2009 – 2014 respectively.

The Vision of the Department of International Studies is “To become the centre of excellence in the field of International Studies’ while its Mission is “To develop human capital rich in academic and professional competencies powered by the research and innovative mindset that is capable of encountering any challenge and take up any key position in the field of International studies and its multi-disciplinary areas within and beyond the national boundaries”.

The Department is run by young and energetic academic staff members and the founding Head of the Department is Senior Lecturer (Ms.) Thumira Gunasena who has obtained her B.A. (Honours) Degree in International Studies from the University of Kelaniya, her M.A in Political Science from the same University and her M.Phil. from the University of Colombo.
Currently, the Department conducts two Bachelor of Arts Degree programmes. The Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Degree Programme is conducted in English medium and the Bachelor of Arts (General) Degree Programme is conducted in Sinhala medium. International Studies Degree programmes offer unique blend of multidisciplinary subject areas for the students to enhance their knowledge in different dimensions of International Studies.

New Department of Political science
In 1996, under the guidance of Professor Kamal Karunanayake, the Bachelor of Arts (General) Degree Programme in Political Science at the University of Kelaniya was commenced and its Bachelor of Arts (Special) Degree Programme was commenced in 1997. In 2002, MA Degree in Political Science and the MSSc. Degree Programme in Political Science. Earlier, all the Degree Programmes in Political Science were conducted under the Department of Economics until 2017 and later, the Department of Political Science was established on the 01st of August 2017 as a separate academic Department of the Faculty of Social Silences. In this way, the new academic Department was established to meet the social needs of the entire society and to fulfill the necessity in the field of political science in this country.

Senior Lecturer and Attorney-at-law (Ms.) Yamuna Niranjani Mendis is the Newly appointed Head of the Department of Political Science who has obtained her BA Degree in Political Science from the University of Colombo, MA Degree from the same University and M.Phil. Degree in Political Science from the University of Kelaniya. Women’s political participation, constitution & constitutional law and democracy are her research interests.

Currently a number of 488 undergraduates are reading for their Degrees at the Department of Political Science. Among them, there are 76 first year undergraduates, 62 second year undergraduates and 73 third year undergraduates who are reading for Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Degree in Political Science. In addition, there are 214 first year undergraduates, 31 second year undergraduates and 32 third year undergraduates who are reading for Bachelor of Arts (General) Degree in Political Science.
