Dr. Siri Wickremesinghe was one of the earliest members of the College of Microbiologists, and its’ President in 1994. Dr. R.S.B. Wickremesinghe was a Consultant Medical Microbiologist at the Medical Research Institute for many years, the first Secretary to the Board of Study in Microbiology of the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine of the University of Colombo, and a much revered and loved teacher of many postgraduate students. Unfortunately, he left us in 2003. Soon after, ‘Siri Wickremesinghe Oration’ was instituted by the Sri Lanka College of Microbiologists in 2004, in memory of late Dr. Siri Wickremesinghe. Since then, the Memorial Oration has been delivered annually by distinguished speakers.
Accordingly, Dr. Siri Wickremasinghe Memorial Oration 2018, which was oraganised by Sri Lanka Collage of Microbiologists, was held on the 13th of February 2018 at Liberty Ballroom of Hotel Ramada, Colombo. Dr. Siri Wickramasinghe Memorial Oration on ‘One Health approach to studies on plagues in Sri Lanka – Past and Present’ was delivered by Senior Professor & Chair in Medical Microbiology and the Chairman of the Research Council of the University of Kelaniya Professor N.P. Sunil-Chandra.
The event was graced by Professor D.M. Semasinghe, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Professor Patrick Rathnayake, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Professor Rohana Luxman Piyadasa, Director of the Communication & Media Unit representing the University of Kelaniya. In addition, the event was participated by Dr. Anil Jasinghe, Director General of Health Services, Dr. Kushlani Jayatilleke, President for 2018 of Sri Lanka College of Microbiologists, Dr. Enoka Corea, former President of Sri Lanka College of Microbiologists and many Doctors.
