A felicitation ceremony to appreciate the service rendered by Senior Professor M.J.S. Wijeyaratne was held on the 09th of February 2018 at the auditorium of the Faculty of Science. The ceremony was organised by the Department of Zoology & Environmental Management, Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya.
Professor M.J.S. Wijeyaratne joined the Department of Zoology as a Probationary Assistant Lecturer in 1976 and was promoted on merit as an Associate Professor in 1989, Professor in 1994 and Senior Professor in 1999. For the past 20 years he was the Chair Professor in the Department of Zoology & Environmental Management.
During his 42 years of illustrious career at the University he has held many positions including the posts of Chief Student Counsellor, Director of the Staff Development Centre, Dean of the Faculty of Science as well as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya. He was instrumental in introducing the University anthem, the annual Vice-Chancellors Awards scheme and the B.Sc. degree programme in Environmental Conservation & Management.
He was also the Founder Chairman of the Research Council of the University, which significantly enhanced the research culture in the University. He has won many national awards including the Best Young Scientist award, CVCD Excellence Award and Presidential Awards for research. He has served as a member of the Governing Councils of many National Institutions in Sri Lanka. Currently he is the Chairman of the National Science and Technology Commission of Sri Lanka.
The felicitation ceremony was held under the patronage of Professor D.M. Semasinghe, Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya. The event was participated by the Deans and the academic staff members of the Faculty of Science and other faculties, Non-academic staff members, invitees from other national universities and research institutions, alumni and students of the Faculty of Science.
