Cultural Exchange Programme with Peace Boat

The Japanese goodwill ship Peace Boat arrived in Colombo on the 23rd of May 2018 on its 98th voyage. Two cultural exchange programmes were conducted by the staff and students of the Department of Modern Languages for the guests of the ship.v

The Global English Training Programme (GET) Programme was conducted for the participants on board who learn English during the voyage, with the participation of over 50 staff and students and it was held at Water Garden Restaurant, Colombo. Another programme with the participation of 34 staff and students from Japanese Studies Unit of the Department of Modern languages was held at Hector Kobbekaduwa Agrarian Research Training Institute (HARTI), Colombo.

The 98th voyage departed from Yokohama, Japan on the 8th of May 2018 and will return on August 21st. It will call at 25 ports during its journey carrying over 1200 passengers. Peace Boat, a Japan- based international non- governmental and non- profit organization has special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the UN (ECOSCO), and has been organizing educational voyages on board a chartered passenger ship to promote peace, conflict prevention, global sustainability and nuclear disarmament.

Prof. Neelakshi C. Premwardhene, Director, International Affairs has been in charge of conducting cultural exchange programmes for the guests of the Peace Boat since 2001.
