Two programmes to commemorate World Environment Day were held on the 14th of June 2018 at the University premises in collaboration with Geography Student Society and Development Studies Student Society.
A tree planting programme was held at the Faculty of Social Sciences with the participation of Prof. D.M. Semasinghe, Vice- Chancellor of the University as the Chief Guest. The event was graced by Senior Prof. Lakshman Senevirathne, Deputy Vice- Chancellor of the University, Prof. A.H.M.H. Abayarathne, Dean of Faculty of Social Sciences, Senior Lecturer Dr. Nishan Sakalasooriya, Head of Department of Geography and Academic Staff members of the Department.
An intellectual discussion was conducted on the theme “Muthurajwela- will the kidney of the motherland fail?” as the second programme of World Environment Day commemoration. The prime objectives of the discussion were making the public aware of wetland conservation and finding solutions to threats against the eco system of Muthurajawela wetlands.
Environmentalist Mr.Sajeewa Chamikara, Mr. Anil Jayamaha, Sri Lankan Actor (Mr.) Rodni Warnakula representing the residents of Muthurajawela village participated in this discussion, conducted by Senior Professor Dr. Nishan Sakalasooriya, Head of Department of Geography. Prof. Lal Mervin Dharmasiri, Academic staff of Department of Geography and other Departments also participated in the event.
