The Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya has pioneered a formal programme to recognize and reward excellence among its undergraduates and academic staff. The ceremony was held on the 3rd of July 2018 at the Main Auditorium of the Faculty of Medicine, Ragama. Outstanding performances by 30 students and 26 teachers from both MBBS and BSc in Speech and Hearing Sciences study programmes were recognized in this prestigious event, before a large gathering of academic staff members and students of the Faculty of Medicine.
The first ceremony was held in 2016 which included Dean’s List awards to recognize outstanding academic performance among students and Teaching Awards to recognize excellence in teaching scholarship.
Later the scheme was expanded to encompass student performance in extra-curricular activities in addition to academic performance. Under the new scheme, excellence among students has been recognized under three categories: Dean’s List awards for outstanding academic performance in each academic year; Faculty Awards for academic excellence combined with excellence in extracurricular activities, also in each academic year; and Faculty Extra-curricular Activities Tributes (FEAT) for outstanding performance in extra-curricular activities during the period of studentship. Excellence among teachers is recognized under teaching, mentorship and research / clinical supervision. This programme is the first of its kind in the Sri Lankan University system, designed to enhance the quality of the study programmes offered by the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya.
On invitation of Prof Nilanthi de Silva, Dean – Faculty of Medicine Prof. D.M. Semasinghe, Vice Chancellor of University of Kelaniya, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Dr. Gamini Wijayarathne, Dean – Faculty of Computing and Technology and Dr. Narada Fernando, Dean – Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies also attended the event.
