Cadre Chair and Senior Professor P.S. Wijesinghe assumed duties as the new Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya. The appointment letter was handed over to Senior Professor P.S. Wijesinghe by Prof. D.M. Semasinghe, Vice- Chancellor of the University on the 14th of August 2018 at the Office of the Vice- Chancellor. The event was also graced by Senior Prof. Lakshman Senevirathne, Deputy Vice- Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya.
Professor Wijesinghe graduated from the Faculty of Medicine University of Peradeniya in 1979. He obtained his board certification in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 1988, and has undergone training both locally and in the United Kingdom. He joined the North Colombo Medical College in 1988 as a senior lecturer in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He joined the Faculty of Medicine University of Kelaniya in 1994 and was involved in the establishment of the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He was appointed as the Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 2004 and was promoted as a senior professor in Obstetrics and Gyanecology in 2012. He is the incumbent president of the Sri Lanka College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.
He has been involved in curricular development and revision, curriculum delivery and evaluation of undergraduates and at the Post Graduate Institute of Medicine University of Colombo. He has done much research on many areas such as quality in obstetric care, vesicovaginal fistula, infertility and early pregnancy complications. He has successfully supervised many research students towards higher degrees. He was involved in student welfare in various capacities. He has served the council of University of Kelaniya and the Board of Management of Post Graduate Institute of Medicine on many occasions.
