Goal
The Internal Quality Assurance Unit of the University of Kelaniya was established in November 2005, with a mandate to create a culture that seeks to continually improve the quality of all academic and other activities in the University of Kelaniya.
Responsibilities
In order to achieve the above goal, the IQAU seeks to:
- To promote quality enhancement activities within the university.
- To liaise with the Quality Assurance and Accreditation Council and the University Grants Commission in facilitating the conduct of external reviews in the university.
- To assist the Vice-Chancellor in preparation of the self-evaluation report for institutional reviews.
- To liaise with the University’s Faculty Internal Quality Assurance Cells to guide faculties and departments in preparation of self-evaluation reports for programme and subject reviews.
- To facilitate implementation of follow-up actions recommended in institution / programme / subject review reports, and monitor progress in their implementation.
- To liaise with IQAUs in other higher educational institutions, to share good practices and enhance the quality of higher education in Sri Lanka.
Activities of the IQAU: 2005 - 2010
In 2009, Kelaniya University became the first university in Sri Lanka to have completed one full cycle of external reviews, through the Subject, Programme and Institutional Reviews conducted by the Quality Assurance and Accreditation Council of the University Grants Commission. The IQAU was very involved in this process, from liaising with the QAAC to conduct awareness workshops regarding the review process, to encouraging Heads of Department to submit self-evaluation reports on schedule. The IQAU was largely responsible for assisting the Vice-Chancellor of the University to draft the University’s Self-Evaluation Report, and making arrangements for the Institutional Review site visit in November 2009.
In January 2010, the IQAU reviewed the recommendations in the Institutional Review Report and took a series of measures to implement these recommendations. These included the setting up of Faculty-level Internal Quality Assurance Cells, which were given the following mandate:
- To promote quality enhancement activities within the Faculty
- To facilitate and monitor implementation of recommendations made by external reviewers during the last external review cycle and liaise with the University IQAU in this regard
- To liaise with the University IQAU in drawing up a schedule for the next 5-year review cycle
- To guide departmental heads in preparation of self-evaluation reports for subject and programme reviews.
The IQAU has met with the IQAC in each Faculty during the course of 2010, reviewing implementation of the recommendations contained in the Composite Report received by the Faculty from the QAAC on completion of all Subject Reviews in the Faculty, and scheduling the 2nd review cycle for the period 2011 – 2015.
