Staff Development Program for Probationary Lecturers-

Calling for applications
The Staff Development Unit of the University of Kelaniya has made arrangements to commence the 10th Cycle of its Staff Development Program on 17th June 2011. The successful completion of this program, which is accredited by the University Grants Commission as an induction program for probationary lecturers, fulfils the requirement for such teachers to have undergone a staff development program for the purpose of confirmation in their positions as stipulated by the UGC Circular No. 721. A large number of probationary teachers from other universities and HEI’s have successfully completed this program in the past several years.
We are pleased to accommodate a limited number of participants for this program from other universities/HEI for this year as well. Participants may register either for the entire program or a selection of one or several segments of it. Details of the program are attached.

Staff Development Course for Probationary Lecturers

The Staff Development Program offered by the Staff Development Unit of the University of Kelaniya is designed for university teachers who are in the initial stages of their career. The objective of the program is to enable such teachers to develop a clearer vision of their future professional roles and to influence them to set career goals for themselves and initiate timely self-directed action to achieve the goals. The course focuses on enhancing the participants’ professional skills and values within a matrix of understanding of the issues and trends in respect of the teaching and learning process, research, and administrative transactions. The course comprises of six segments that deal with six areas of critical importance in the professional development of a university teacher and will involve at least 150 hours of intensive and participatory learning. The six segments of the program and course fees are given below.

Sessions will be held on Fridays from 9.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. for a period of approximately six months. A certificate will be awarded to those who have successfully completed the course. Prospective applicants are requested to submit applications for enrolment through their respective universities or institutes using the attached application form.
Explanatory Notes
- Program Content: The program consists of six segments dealing with six areas of critical importance in the professional development of a university teacher and involves at least 150 hours of work for a participant.
Segment I: Trends and Future Scenarios of Higher Education and Professional Development
(Involves 12 hours of scheduled work sessions and at least 3 hours of related work outside the scheduled sessions)
Segment II: Enhancing Teaching Competencies
(Involves 27 hours of scheduled work sessions and at least 12 hours of related work outside the scheduled sessions)
Segment III: Enhancing Research Competencies
(Involves 27 hours of scheduled work sessions and at least 12 hours of related work outside the scheduled sessions)
Segment IV: Using New Information and Communication Technologies
(Involves 24 hours of scheduled work sessions and at least 12 hours of related work outside the scheduled sessions)
Segment V: Being More Effective in the Administration/Management Roles
(Involves 12 hours of scheduled work sessions and at least 2 hours of related work outside the scheduled sessions)
Segment VI: Enhancing Counselling Competencies
(Involves 6 hours of scheduled work sessions and at least 1 hour of related work outside the scheduled sessions)
You may enroll in any one or more of the above mentioned segments.
A certificate will be issued on successful completion of each segment. The criteria for successful completion of (i.e., achieving the pass level in) a segment include (a) successful participation in no less than 75% of the scheduled work-sessions, and (b) satisfactory performance in assignments based on negotiated agreements and portfolio entries. A candidate who achieves the Pass Level in each of the six segments will be certified as having achieved the Pass Level in the course as a whole.
- Medium: The course will be conducted in the English medium.
- Program Schedule: The program will be conducted on Fridays in two sessions (9.30am-12.30pm, 1.30pm -4.30pm).
- The application should reach Director, Staff Development Unit, University of Kelaniya, Kelaniya on or before 20th May 2011.
- Course fee: Course fee for the program is Rs. 24,500.00 Those who is following only one or more selected segments can pay the course fee of those segments only. Payments should be made by A/C payee cheque drawn in favour of ‘University of Kelaniya’ and the cheque should reach the Director, Staff Development Unit, on or before the starting day of that Segment.
