Staff Development Unit

The Staff Development Unit (SDU) was established in July 1998 and it functions under the supervision of a Director who is a senior academic of the University. Dr.P.M.C. Thilakarathne who is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Accountancy serves as the current Director of the SDU.

The mission of the SDU is to provide appropriate training services to suit the professional needs of all staff of the University. Its objectives include the enhancement of competencies of the academic staff in the areas of teaching, assessment, research, curriculum development, using new information and communication technologies (NICT), administration and management, and providing specialist advisory services to other educational institutions. However, as a matter of policy, the immediate focus of training will be the needs of the more recently recruited academic staff holding probationary status. With time the services of SDU would be expanded to widen its target group and diversify the training methodologies.

The SDU conducts the training programme on teaching methodology for probationary Lecturers, which is a requirement for their confirmation as per the existing regulations. This training programme, which has a duration of 150 hours, is accredited by the University Grants Commission. This programme is open for all probationary lecturers in the entire University system of Sri Lanka and in addition to those in the University of Kelaniya, probationary lecturers from the Open University, Rajarata University, University of Wayamba, Eastern University, South Eastern University, University of Jaffna, Buddha Sravaka Bhikku University, Pali and Buddhist University, University of Moratuwa and Gampaha Wickramarachchi Ayurveda Institute have already followed this programme.

In addition to conducting this programme, the SDU organizes seminars and workshops which are useful for human resources development of the University staff. It also provides professional assistance to Departments and individual staff members on matters relating to curriculum development, teaching and assessment.


Staff Development Training Programs (SDTP)
Since inception, the SDU has conducted ten cycles of training programmes for probationary lecturers.
