The HETC University Development Grant (UDG) Project (Window 1) has four main activities, all of which involve study programmes and learning facilities for internal undergraduate students. The four activities focus on information technology, English proficiency, soft skills development and ethnic cohesion. The project has been funded to the value of Rs 70 million over 3 years (2011 – 2014), and involves activities in all faculties that have internal undergraduates.
The overall project objectives are as follows:
+ Activity 1- Enhancing ICT Skills
To enhance the Information and Communication Technology skills of undergraduates by
- Strengthening the computer literacy programme in the University
- Strengthening study programmes with IT components
- Improving study programmes dependent on IT

+ Activity 2- Improving English Skills
To improve undergraduate students proficiency in English language by
- Introducing Computer Assisted Language Learning
- Enhancing the existing teaching and learning environment in the ELTU
- Introducing a CALL-based English Achievement Test

+ Activity 3- Strengthening Soft Skills
To strengthen undergraduate students’ soft skills through
- Raising awareness among academic staff regarding teaching-learning activities that strengthen soft skills
- Curricular revisions to increase learning activities that encourage the development of soft skills
- Encouraging students to engage in extra-curricular activities that will strengthen soft skills
- Offering career guidance directly aimed at enhancing graduate employability

+ Activity 4- Enhancing Ethnic Cohesion
To promote ethnic cohesion through
- Maintenance and promotion of ethnic harmony within the university
- Producing graduates who promote and contribute to ethnic harmony in the country
- The academic community’s contribution to development of appropriate national policies
- Training future leaders (students) and trainers (staff) who are able to lead and guide civil society towards sustainable peace
