University of Kelaniya raises awareness of Digital Media

A workshop on “Digital Communication Trends and Media Development in Sri Lanka” organized by the Department of Mass Communication of the University of Kelaniya and Communication and Media Training Forum (CMTF) was held on the 11th February 2016 at the auditorium of the Faculty of Social Sciences.

The aim of the workshop was to raise awareness among journalists of the use of digital technology in Sri Lankan media and its practical difficulties. The opening ceremony of the event was attended by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Senior Professor Sunanda Madduma Bandara, the Chairman of Sri Lanka Telecom, Mr. P.G. Kumarasinghe, the Deans, the Head of the Department of Mass Communication, academic staff from the field of media from other universities, the academic staff of the Department of Mass Communication of University of Kelaniya, media chiefs and a large number of media representatives representing media.

Mr. M.J.R. David, former Lecturer of the Mass Media Unit of the University of Colombo, Professor Gamini Wijayarathna, the Dean (Acting) of the Faculty of Computing and Technology of the University of Kelaniya, Mr. Haridu Nanayakkara, Manager, Mobitel Company, Mr. G.A.S. Gunananda, Deputy Director, Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka, Mr. Upali Ambewela, Senior Engineering Advisor, Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation, Mr. Rohan Perera, Deputy Director General (Engineering) of Sri Lanka Rupavahini Cooperation, Mr. Tharaka Mohotti, MTV/MBC Director/Engineer conducted informative lectures and the ensuing discussion was joined by journalists and academics. On this occasion, Professor Gamini Wijayarathna made a special comment on how it would be possible to overcome many difficulties related to digital technology through the newly established Faculty of Computing and Information Technology of the University of Kelaniya. Mr. Ariyarathna Athugala, Professor of Department of Mass Communication and the former Director General of the Government News Department was the coordinator of the workshop.
