The Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Kelaniya has introduced Sri Lanka’s first diploma programme on Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms for prison officers. The inaugural ceremony of the diploma programme was held on 11th of October, 2014. Prof. Sunanda Maddumabandara, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Mr. Chandrarathne Pallegama, the Commissioner General of the Prisons, and several other distinguished guests were present at this historical event. Eighty five prison officers were enrolled for the programme, and in future, the diploma will be upgraded to a degree.

The Best speaker of the University of Kelaniya 2014
The Grand Finale of the “Best Speaker -2014” competition organized by the Gavel Club of the University of Kelaniya was held on 09th October 2014 at the Dharmaloka Hall. The event was presided over by Prof. Sunanda Madduma Bandara, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya. Prof. J.B. Dissanayake and the Supreme Court judge, Mrs. Chandra Ekanayake were the guest speakers at this event. Bilal Hassan, an undergraduate of the Faculty of Science won the best speaker award.
The competition was held under the auspices of Dr. Narada Fernando, the Director of the Career Guidance Unit and Dr. M.P. Diyamulla, the Senior Treasurer of the Gavel Club.

The 75th General Convocation
The 75th General Convocation of the University of Kelaniya was held on the 6th of October, 2014 at the Bandaranaike International Memorial Conference Hall. This event was graced by the Hon. Chancellor Ven. Velamitiyawe Dharmakeerthi Sri Kusaladhammbhidana Thero, Chief Prelate of the Colombo and Chilaw regions, Professor Sunanda Maddumabandara, the Vice Chancellor of the University, the Deans of the Faculties and the academic staff of the University. At this ceremony, degrees were conferred upon 894 students who successfully completed their studies in Business Management and Sciences.

Sama Yathra 2014”: University of Kelaniya celebrates international day of peace
The students following Peace and Conflict Resolution degree programme offered by the Department of Philosophy of the Faculty of Social Sciences organized “Sama Yathra 2014”, an event organized annually to commemorate the international day of peace and it was held at the Dhammaloka hall on 30th September 2014. The event was organized under the auspices of Prof. A.H.M.H. Aberatne, Dean of Faculty of Social Sciences and it was coordinated by Prof. Gamini Hapuarachchi, Head of Department of Philosophy. The occasion was an amalgamation of varied cultural events that represented different religions and ethnicities in Sri Lanka.

UoK Confucius Institute celebrates Confucius Institute Day
The Confucius Institute at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Kelaniya celebrated the Confucius Institute Day on 27th September, 2014 at the BMICH. This event concurred with the 10th year anniversary of the establishment of the Confucius Institute by the People’s Republic of China at the University of Kelaniya. The dignitaries, the Honourable Minister Bandula Gunawardena, the Minister of Education, and the Honourable Minister Nandimithra Ekanayake, the Deputy Minister of Higher Education along with Prof. Sunanda Maddumabandara, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya were present at this event which included a number of Chinese cultural events.

MoU between the University of Kelaniya and Ambedkar University
A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the University of Kelaniya and Ambedkar University, Lucknow at a special function held at Ambedkar University recently. The signatories were Professor Sunanda Maddumbandara, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya and Professor R.C. Sobti, the Vice Chancellor of Ambedkar University. The two universities will collaborate to launch a series of special programmes about Buddhist Studies. This event was graced by many distinguished members of the academic and non-academic staff of Ambedkar University including Professor Victor Babu, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Head of the History Department.

Chinese Food Festival at University of Kelaniya
A Chinese food festival was held at the University on 26th September,2014 organized by the Confucius Institute that belongs to the Faculty of Humanities. This festival was held in concurrence with the 10th year anniversary of the establishment of the Confucius Institute by the People’s Republic of China at the University of Kelaniya and the first Global Confucius Day.

New plant tissue culture lab for University of Kelaniya
The foundation stone for the new plant tissue culture lab for the Department of Botany of the Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya was laid at the Gampaha Henerathgoda Botanical garden on 29th of September, 2014. The laying of the foundation stone took place at the auspicious time 10:31 and the following dignitaries were present at this event: Honorable Minister Basil Rajapaksa, the Minister of Economic Development; Prof. Sunanda Maddumabandara, The Vice Chancellor of the Univeristy of Kelaniya; Mr. J.J. Ratnasiri, the Divisional Secretary of Gampaha & Dr. Cyril Wijesundara, the Director General of the Department of National Botanical Gardens. This project funded by the Ministry of Economic Development is to be completed within the time span of one and a half months.

Welamitiyawe Dharmakeerti Sri Kusaladhamma Nayaka Thera- Colombo Halawatha Dedisawe Sanganayake/the Honourable Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Prof. Sunanda Maddumabandara- the Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Dr. Sunil Jayantha Nawarathna- the Secretary to the Ministry of Higher Education, and Prof. Kshanika Hirimburegam-the Chairperson of the University Grants Commission also graced this occasion.

Donation of equipment to University Neonatal Unit in Colombo North Teaching Hospital (CNTH)
Since the establishment of the Fetal Medicine clinic at the Obstetrics & Gynaecology Professorial Unit of the Teaching Hospital Ragama, the clinic has had numerous referrals from different parts of the country with regard to various congenital anomalies in fetuses, requiring precise neonatal care.In order to provide optimum care for these neonates for a better outcome, the staff of the Fetal Medicine clinic and the Neonatal Unit made a request to the First Lady Her Excellency Shiranthi Wickramasinghe Rajapakse, to provide necessary equipment to the professorial neonatal unit through a donation provided by His Excellency Abdul Hamid Abdul Fattah K. Al Mulla, the Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates. The equipment was officially handed over at a ceremony held on 25thAugust 2014 at the Colombo North Teaching Hospital Ragama.
