The Vice-Chancellor

Prof.SunandaM 567x800His Excellency, the President of Sri Lanka, appointed Professor Sunanda Madduma Bandara, Professor in the department of Economics, as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya. He assumed duties on the 20th of March, 2014. Professor Madduma Bandara graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Honours degree in Economics from the University of Kelaniya and obtained his postgraduate qualifications from Shiga University, Nagoya University and Osaka Foreign Languages University in Japan. He has held several administrative positions in the university including that of Head of the Department of Economics and Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences. In addition, he was the Director of Government Information and until recently was the Director General (Development and Communication) of the Ministry of Economic Development, Government of Sri Lanka.

During his tenure as the Dean of Social Sciences, he was able to develop the physical and human resources of the Faculty of Social Sciences. Among the physical resources were three multistoried buildings, a state of the art Faculty Board Room and a computer laboratory, all of which have been constructed using generated funds of the Faculty of Social Sciences. In addition, he established the Social Sciences Research Centre which provides research expenses for staff as well as funding to participate in local and international research symposia, in order to strengthen research skills of the staff. As the Dean of Social Sciences, he established a research library at faculty level and commenced several research journals to disseminate research findings of staff and students.

He was instrumental in establishing the Career Guidance Unit of the University, introducing new curricula to the Faculty of Social Sciences and new programmes aimed at developing soft skills and creative abilities of students with a view to enhancing their employability. As Dean, Prof. Madduma Bandara was instrumental in enhancing staff development at the Faculty of Social Sciences.

In addition to motivating fellow staff members to engage in research, Professor Madduma Bandara has carried out many research projects in the field of Economics with special reference to Sri Lanka. He has also published several books and articles in the field and presented his research findings at national and international symposia.
