The first green university in Sri Lanka
The University of Kelaniya secured the first place among Sri Lankan universities in green practices and 259th position in world rankings according to the UI GreenMetrics ranking in 2017. UI GreenMetric ranking is based broadly on the conceptual framework of Environment, Economy, and Equity. This year 619 universities in 76 countries participated, compared to last year 515 universities in 75 countries. The rankings look at six indicators of each university: setting and infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste, water, transportation and education.
According to the most recent Webometrics rankings carried out in January 2018, the University of Kelaniya has been ranked at the 2,691st position in the world and 924th in Asian Continent and 108th in the South Asian region. Compared to last year, the University has improved its world rank by 76 positions and ranking among Asian region by 22 positions. Also, it has improved their Sri Lankan ranking by one position and has become the 3rd best University in Sri Lanka.
Twenty-three Academic staff members of the Faculty of Medicine and two Academic staff members of the Faculty of Science received President’s awards for Scientific publications.
Several academic symposia and research conferences were held to enhance the research culture of the university in 2017. The Annual Research Symposium, 18th International Postgraduate Research Conference 2017 organized by the Faculty of Graduate Studies was held on 08th December 2017, on the theme of “Research for sustainable development, applications beyond publications”. In addition to this symposium, 19 international and national level Research Conferences and Symposia were organized and conducted by the faculties and academic departments for the advancement of the research culture within the university.
With the aim of enhancing the artistic and literary skills of the undergraduates of the University Performances, Media, Art and Literature Competition, Sprout (Kalana) 2017 was organized and conducted by the Arts Council. The awards were presented to the winners of the 1st place in each category, while valuable cash prizes and Certificates were awarded to all the winners of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in each category.
Celebrating the golden jubilee, 50th anniversary of the Faculty of Science, the “Vidya 2017” exhibition was organized and held on October 2-9 successfully. “Inventio 2017”, motivating the undergraduates for innovations was organized by the Technology and Innovations Support Centre of the University of Kelaniya parallel to the exhibition.
Additional to these programs, Stylish Marketer Fashion Show, The Inter-University Best Speaker Contest, Art Exhibitions, University Stage Drama Festivals, Photography exhibitions, Media Festivals, Talent shows, Colors Awarding Ceremony, Tree Plantation Programmes, Career Fair 2017, Welfare Projects and several workshops were some of the extra-curricular programmes conducted in 2017.
Students from every Faculty participated in national and international games and competitions held during the year 2017 and the students of the University of Kelaniya won several national and international awards, bringing honour to the University.
The different events and activities organized by students and staff as departments, faculties or organizations within the university bestead for the advancement of the University’s reputation as well as the talents and skills of students of the University.
