The University of Kelaniya is located in the historical domain of the Kelaniya city outside the municipal limits of Colombo. It has seven different Academic Faculties, fifty-six (56) academic departments and three institutes with 565 academic staff members and 760 non- academic staff members. Also, the University has three other affiliated Institutes namely, Gampaha Wickramarachchi Ayurvedic Institute, Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology, Postgraduate Institute of Pali and Buddhist Studies.
Students of the University get various services under following categories such as Student Counselling Service, Career Guidance Unit, Personal Counselling Unit (Kalana Mithuru Sevana), Medical Centre, Physical Education, Cultural Centre, Arts Council, Library (including Faculty Libraries), Information and Communication Technology Center and International Student Affairs Unit. Except for these centres and units, there are several others for different but specific services. For example, Quality Assurance Centre, University Statistics and Data Monitoring Unit (USDMU), Media Unit, Staff Development Center, Technology and Innovation Support Centre, Sustainable Development Centre, Centre for Distance and Continuing Education (CDCE), Centre of Excellence for Strategic Brand Identity Development (CESBID) and the Inter - Faculty Center for Coordinating the Modular System (ICCMS).
Ensuring the research culture of the University, the University has a research council which coordinates with each faculty’s research service center and other research centers such as the Centre for Heritage Studies, Centre for Gender Studies, Center for Chinese Studies, Centre for Japanese Studies, Centre for Korean Studies, Palm Leaf Manuscript Study and Research, Environment & Development Consultants (EDCON) and the Samakathana Research Centre.
Except for the Faculty of Medicine, which is located in Ragama premises, all the other faculties are located in Dalugama, twelve kilometers away from the capital city in a whole area of 55 acres. The main buildings on Dalugama premises are the Student Centre, Science Block, Humanities and Social Sciences Building Complex, Commerce and Management Studies Building Complex, Science Lecture Theatre Complex, Auditorium and Ancillary Building, Sri Dharmaloka Convocation Hall, Aquaculture and Microbiology Buildings, ICT Centre, the Library, and the Administrative Block. Sri Dharmaloka Convocation Hall has a seating capacity of 1,000, while the Science Faculty Auditorium and Professor Sunil Shantha Memorial auditorium of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies can accommodate 250 & 300 persons respectively. Sri Dharmaloka Convocation hall and Social Sciences Auditorium were recently upgraded as state-of-art auditoriums with modern technology.
In terms of housing, the Bhikku Hostel and the Women’s Hostel Complex are located within the Dalugama campus, while the Men’s Hostels and some Women’s Hostels are located nearby. Venerable Ratmalane Sri Dharmarama Girls’ hostel complex was opened in December, providing accommodation facilities for 500 students.  In providing IT facilities, in addition to the main ICT Centre, every Faculty possesses well-equipped ICT Centers which are managed either by the faculty or by the department.  To facilitate teaching, learning and research Wi-Fi facility have been expanded to cover the entire University and the hostels. Three language laboratories are located in the Faculty of Humanities. All departments of the Faculty of Science and Faculty of Commerce & Management Studies consist of research laboratories in addition to classroom facilities.
At Ragama, the buildings include the Administration Block, Lecture Theatres and Laboratories Complex, Disabilities Studies Unit Building, Molecular Medicine Unit building, Preclinical Buildings Complex, Auditorium with a seating capacity of 200 and men’s and women’s hostels. Construction of two lecture theatres and a students’ hostel was commenced at the faculty premises recently.
The human resource of the University comprises, concisely, academic staff members, administrative staff, academic support staff, executive staff and non- academic staff. The following figure illustrates the organizational structure descriptively.

History

The University of Kelaniya has its origin in the historic Vidyalankara Pirivena, founded in 1875 as a centre of learning for Buddhist monks. It was one of the two great national centres of traditional higher learning, heralding the first phase of the national movement and national resurgence.

UoK Present Status

As per the academic calendar of the University, the academic year 2014/15 was ended on February 19, 2017, and the academic activities of the year 2015/16 was begun on February 20, 2017, and is scheduled to be completed on February 11, 2018. 2,968 students were registered as new enrollment in internal undergraduate degree programs in 2017. 1,771 students were enrolled for postgraduate studies during 2017. The international recognition of the university was enhanced by the enrollment of 50 international students for both undergraduate and postgraduate studies to the university in 2017. Today, the University of Kelaniya has ten thousand sixty (10,060) students studying for undergraduate degree programs, where about 1.5% of students are enrolled under the foreign category. There are two thousand seven hundred nine (2,709) students for postgraduate study programs and for external undergraduate programmes total of ninety-five thousand nine hundred six (95,906) students. University produced 2,431 internal graduates and 631 external graduates and 1,229 postgraduates in 2017.
