UoK General Information

As per the academic calendar of the University, the academic year 2014/15 was ended on February 19, 2017, and the academic activities of the year 2015/16 was begun on February 20, 2017, and is scheduled to be completed on February 11, 2018. 2,968 students were registered as new enrollment in internal undergraduate degree programs in 2017. 1,771 students were enrolled for postgraduate studies during 2017. The international recognition of the university was enhanced by the enrollment of 50 international students for both undergraduate and postgraduate studies to the university in 2017. Today, the University of Kelaniya has ten thousand sixty (10,060) students studying for undergraduate degree programs, where about 1.5% of students are enrolled under the foreign category. There are two thousand seven hundred nine (2,709) students for postgraduate study programs and for external undergraduate programmes total of ninety-five thousand nine hundred six (95,906) students. University produced 2,431 internal graduates and 631 external graduates and 1,229 postgraduates in 2017.

The University of Kelaniya has its origin in the historic Vidyalankara Pirivena, founded in 1875 as a centre of learning for Buddhist monks. It was one of the two great national centres of traditional higher learning, heralding the first phase of the national movement and national resurgence.

The University of Kelaniya secured the first place among Sri Lankan universities in green practices and 259th position in world rankings according to the UI GreenMetrics ranking in 2017. UI GreenMetric ranking is based broadly on the conceptual framework of Environment, Economy, and Equity. This year 619 universities in 76 countries participated, compared to last year 515 universities in 75 countries. The rankings look at six indicators of each university: setting and infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste, water, transportation and education.

  • Construction of 3rd & 4th floor in the block “B” in building complex for the Technology Degree programme.
  • Construction of four Storied 100 room hostel building for University of Kelaniya (Hostel No.3 – Ragama)
  • Construction of six storied building complex for the Faculty of Science
  • Construction of building for the Information & Communication Technology Center
  • Construction of six storied building complex for examination halls & lecture halls - stage III (TCE of Stage I, II & III - 400 Million)
  • Proposed modification for the existing gymnasium stage I
  • Multipurpose building at the Faculty of Medicine at Ragama
  • Proposed lecture theatre complex at the Faculty of Science
    • Main Campus – Dalugama
  • Medical Faculty - Ragama
    • Gampaha Wickramarachchi Ayurveda Institute - Yakkala
    • Faculty of Computing and Technology - Peliyagoda
    • Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology – Colombo 07
  • Postgraduate institute of Pali & Buddhist Studies
There are more than 50 MoUs in operation between UoK and external bodies.
