Disaster Relief Loan Scheme for Staff and Students Affected by “Ditwah” Cyclone

The Council of the University of Kelaniya has approved the implementation of a Disaster Relief Loan Scheme to support University staff and students who were adversely affected by the “Ditwah” cyclone during the period 27 November 2025 to 02 December 2025.
Eligibility: Staff members and students of the University who suffered damages as a result of the “Ditwah” cyclone are eligible to apply for this relief loan.Loan Amount

Maximum loan amount: Up to Rs. 400,000/-
Loans will be granted subject to the terms and conditions approved by the University Council.

Relevant supporting documents as proof of cyclone-related damages

MSc in Crop Protection and Plant Biotechnology – Intake 2026

The Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Kelaniya, invites applications for the MSc in Crop Protection and Plant Biotechnology (MSc in CPBT) – Intake 2026. This postgraduate programme develops advanced scientific and applied expertise in modern crop protection, plant pathology, molecular biology, and plant biotechnology, supporting national and global agricultural and bioscience needs.

Programme Overview

The MSc in Crop Protection and Plant Biotechnology is an interdisciplinary postgraduate programme that integrates classical plant sciences with modern molecular and biotechnological approaches. The programme equips graduates with analytical, laboratory, and research competencies required to address contemporary challenges in crop productivity, plant health, and sustainable agriculture.

Entry Qualifications

Applicants must possess a BSc (Honours/Special) degree in Biology-related subjects (SLQF Level 6), or a BSc (General) degree with Biology-related subjects (SLQF Level 5), or any other equivalent qualification acceptable to the University. Applicants with pending results may apply, provided the effective date of the degree is prior to the programme commencement date.

Programme Structure & Mode of Delivery

Lectures are conducted online, while laboratory sessions are conducted on-site during weekends.

Programme Duration & Qualification

MSc in Crop Protection and Plant Biotechnology: 2 years, coursework and research, SLQF Level 10.
Master of Crop Protection and Plant Biotechnology: 1 year, coursework only, SLQF Level 9.

Course Fees

MSc in CPBT (2 years): Total fee Rs. 325,000 (Year 1 – Rs. 230,000, Year 2 – Rs. 95,000), payable in four instalments.
Master of CPBT (1 year): Total fee Rs. 230,000, payable in three instalments.

The Postgraduate Institute of Pali and Buddhist Studies (PGIPBS) of the University of Kelaniya was known as the Vidyalankara Institute of Buddhist Studies since its inception on 23rd November 1975 until 30th December 1979. Then, it was affiliated to the Vidyalankara Campus of the University of Ceylon (Sri Lanka). Its present name, status, and structure derived from the Postgraduate Institute of Pali and Buddhist Studies Ordinance No.8 of 1977, which came into operation on 1st January 1980.

The Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology (PGIAR) was established on the 1st January 1986, by order dated 18th December 1985, under section 24A of the Universities Act No. 16 of 1978 by the University Grants Commission. The PGIAR is a Postgraduate Institute of the University of Kelaniya. It is the prime institution for postgraduate studies and research in archaeology and subjects related to archaeology in the country.
